- Workshop HisTochText, March 2023, BNF - La Bibliothèque nationale de France, Richelieu Paris
- Description
- Discussion of the perspectives of research on Abhidharma texts, based on the collaborative work done by Adam A. Catt and Athanaric Huard. The results have been recorded in two articles in the Journal Asiatique, in 2020 and 2022, published by them together with Yuima Inaba (Kyoto). Other studies are in preparation. This gave the opportunity to discuss issues of translation of technical terms of Sanskrit into Tocharian (A and B). The texts of philosophical commentary are very difficult to understand without the comparison with texts in other languages of Buddhism, especially Chinese and Tibetan. The revision of Pelliot Koutchéen manuscripts in Tocharian B has concentrated on the fragment PK NS 53, which had been first edited by Pinault (1988). The text contains a teaching on the chain of causes according to Buddhism, alias skr. pratītyasamutpāda ‘origination by dependence’ on one thing on another. After thorough examination of the photograph, it proved possible to improve this edition, and to better understand some passages. The fruits of this collaborative work have been implemented on the CEToM database.
